Donna Waynam-Maurrer

I was born in Flint Michigan in 1955. A very good year. I have always drawn, it was the only way I knew to express myself. I was extremely shy.

Colored pencil was next, then I graduated to oil paints. I saw a program on PBS with William Alexander painting and I knew I wanted to try. So, I began. I am self-taught.

Music has always influenced my life and my art. So capturing, on canvas, the passion and energy of Musicians came naturally. Using thin glazes of oil paint helps me achieve the aura, depth and vibration of a person. I study my subjects and if they're musicians I listen to their music when I paint them.

Some think my work is airbrushed because you don't see a lot of brush strokes. Not so. I use my oils like watercolor, putting down multiple layers of color. This way I can achieve brilliant colors and depth.

After a detailed drawing, I paint the eyes. If you can't capture the eyes the painting will never work. Next, I use light, shadows and color to convey the mood.

I call my style Spiritual Realism. You can easily recognize what it is but you can also feel the spirit of what I have painted. Some of my favorite painters are Johannes Vermeer, William Bouguereau, Alphonse Mucha and John Singer Sargent.

Being self taught I am perpetually learning new things from every painting I do. When something or someone inspires me I love the challenge of capturing them on canvas. Whether it's animals, automobiles, flowers scenery, elegant portraits or vintage hood ornaments. Living in the world of art is like living in a dream where all things are possible. I paint in oils and I love the way they glide across the canvas.

My art has taken me down many roads, to adventures I never could have imagined. I have met the most amazing people and made many friends. Art is not just what I do it’s who I Am.

On August 2, 2025 I opened up my own Art gallery called “The Pink Duck Art Gallery. 141 N. Center Turlock CA. 95380. Now I can help other artists and help everyone who comes in the gallery learn to love and appreciate the Art and the incredible artists who make it.
